Who are you, dear readers ?

31 August 2008

After five months and thirty posts (and not a lot of comments… yet), I was wondering who is reading me. Here are some questions about you and about the blog, I’m impatient to read your answers in the comments !

  • How did you discover my blog ?
  • What kind of other musical style are you into ?
  • Do you even like yodel, if yes why ?
  • Is there any kind of yodel you’re eager to discover: American yodels, Swiss yodels, yodels from odd countries, yodels in rock, in country, in children’s music, in jazz, in blues, in classical music, yodels in movies, yodels in commercials, others ?
  • Do you want other eerie things like throat singing or whistling ?
  • Do you have great yodels you’d like to share ?
  • Would you be interested to write guest posts ?

Thanks for your answers, any suggestions are welcome !

Yodelingly yours, Daisy Montana

  1. HI Mademoiselle, I introduced myself recently. I’m looking to gain a modest education in yodeling. As I mentioned, I’m a Jimmie Rodgers fan. The only other yodeling I’ve listened to very much is Leon Thomas when he did some jazz yodeling with Pharaoh Sanders. I’ve been wracking my brain trying to figure out where I learned about this blog and I can’t remember. I’m a friend of a music blog called Siblingshot in the bleachers. Ib of Siblingshot is a huge fan of WFMU’s beware of the blog, so I might have found you through them. I have a blog, but I don’t post often. I’m strapped for time, and beset with technical problems. I’ve posted a link to your blog, but I don’t think it’s brought you many readers. I’ve only got about four or five regular readers myself. I keep meaning to post something about you, but, as I said, I haven’t been posting much at all.

Now, tell us about yourself. One of the reasons why I love music blogs, besides the music, is the cheery fanaticism of music bloggers. Why yodeling? What else, besides yodeling, do you like?

If I could think of anything to say on the subject of yodeling, I would be happy to guest post. Unfortunately, I don’t think I have anything to contribute.

Eager to learn more about yodeling, I remain,
    Your humble servant,
    Jon

Sometimes yes, sometimes no but it definitively add some freshness in the air

    • Googling’ for yodeling – love your site, thanks!

  3. * How did you discover my blog ?
    Through Schadenfreudian Therapy.

    * What kind of other musical style are you into ?
Too many kinds to name, though among the quirkier sounds I look for are whistling, theremin, pizzicato, organ, Bollywood, accordion, 30s swing, toy piano, and harp.

    * Do you even like yodel, if yes why ?
I love yodel in all its manifestations, because it demonstrates the versatility of the human voice and expresses a range of emotions that no other vocal noise can.

    * Is there any kind of yodel you’re eager to discover?
I’m curious about all types of yodel, but I’d like to learn everything about the origins of yodel, particularly Swiss yodel. Some of your earlier posts suggested there was more to come on this topic. I look forward to that.

    * Do you want other eerie things like throat singing or whistling ?
    You betcha.

    * Do you have great yodels you’d like to share ?
I have a couple of great yodels on mixtapes, but I don’t have much info on them. One is called Erzherzog Johan Jodler and another is Min Vater ist en Alpenzellar. If I can figure out how to rip them from tapes and if you want them, I’m willing to share.

    * Would you be interested to write guest posts ?
I’m not nearly knowledgeable or yodel-endowed enough for that, but I sure hope others will contribute cool yodels.

Thanks for a brilliant blog. I will share with everyone I know. Keep up the great work!

  4. * How did you discover my blog ?
Hello, I just found your blog after reading the comment that you left me on mine 🙂

    * What kind of other musical style are you into ?
I don’t know the first thing about yodel…! I don’t consider myself to be a musical person, but I like punk-rock, ska, classical, music from the 1950’s and 1960’s, and jazz.

    * Do you even like yodel, if yes why ?
I don’t really know anything about it!

    * Do you want other eerie things like throat singing or whistling ?
    Why not?!

    * Do you have great yodels you’d like to share ?
    Sadly, no.

    * Would you be interested to write guest posts ?
Well as I said I don’t know anything about yodels…

Anyway, thanks for passing by my blog, and see you soon!

    Mademoiselle M.

  5. Hi Daisy,

I just discovered your blog today, thanks to a link on bart’s website. I’m looking forward to gradually checking out all your older posts, and I hope the links to the music are still working.
I’m listening to all kinds of music, but as I get older I’m drawn more and more to acoustic music. I often go to bluegrass concerts nowadays. I’m very interested in yodeling (I have quite a few songs in my collection, too), but I also am fascinated by other sounds the unaccompanied human voice can produce, such as hollering, whistling, a cappella singing, throat singing, etc.
Writing a guest post sounds intriguing, sure, I’d love to try it.

I’m looking forward to many more posts on your website!

  6. Thank you for all your comments !

Why did I start a blog ? I suppose it is because I want to share what I know about yodel, and why yodel ? Just because it’s a (strange) way to talk about lots of different musics. I listen to a great variety of styles, from rock, to pop, to experimental, to traditional (from yodel to indonesian gamelan), to film music (from Hans Zimmer to Bollywood)… I’m just not a lot into jazz and classical music.
I’m also interested in photography, in art, in history and in retro things like tiki culture and cocktails.

I would like to share a lot of different things but the weeks are too short, and for the moment, I’ll stick with one post a week. I hope I can write more in the future… And I promise you I have really strange things coming !

  7. * How did you discover my blog ?
Googling Diane Jewitt after discovering her youtube video and blogging it.
    http://ukcommentators.blogspot.com/2008/09/dont-push-me.html

    * What kind of other musical style are you into ?
Pretty much everything except death metal.

    * Do you even like yodel, if yes why ?
Yes, though Lord knows why. It’s so silly it’s magnificent.

    * Is there any kind of yodel you’re eager to discover: American yodels, Swiss yodels, yodels from odd countries, yodels in rock, in country, in children’s music, in jazz, in blues, in classical music, yodels in movies, yodels in commercials, others ?
I’ve read it was used in communication across Alpine valleys, but how ? How do you yodel “Hans, fancy a beer?” “Sure do” “meet me at the Gasthof Traube at sunset then”.

How about cowboy yodeling, or does that come under country ?

    * Do you want other eerie things like throat singing or whistling ?
Alpenhorn music might be interesting, if such there be.
    * Do you have great yodels you’d like to share ?
Not really. Handel’s “Oh Had I Jubal’s Lyre” comes very close to classical yodelling.

    * Would you be interested to write guest posts ?
I’m not sure I have enough to say on the (fascinating) subject. Let the music yodel for itself.

  8. I found your blog via Labal Tall. I am a turkey caller. I can call turkeys from the vasty deep, and sometimes they come. I call geese and ducks too. I also like to do Tarzan calls in tunnels, where the acoustics are good. I grew up listening to great yodelers here in Virginia.

I would like to hear some fancy whistling. Bing Crosby was pretty good…

  9. To George E. Lee: maybe not turkey calls, but here you’ll find a list of bird calls: http://bartyodel.wordpress.com/2008/09/09/wtm-1020-birdvogeloiseau/
    And to all of you: thanks a lot for writing ! I hope I can please you with more goodies in the next weeks;
